Erectile dysfunction (ED) is when a man has trouble getting or maintaining an erection long or firm enough for sex. 51.3% of Singaporean men, above the age of 30, experience some form of ED (Tan et al., 2003), making it one of the most common sexual health issues here.
ED can be caused by physiological, psychological reasons or a combination of both. Common physiological causes include cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity and aging. These conditions are directly affected by blood circulation in the body, and blood flow to the penis is what makes for healthy, hard erections.
Common psychological causes include depression, anxiety and stress disorders, which affects overall mood, libido and sexual satisfaction. Therapy may be a good method of treatment in these cases. For more details, do read our post here.
